The Illusive Call

You ever noticed when you were a kid your dreams are HUGE? You know what I’m talking about, kids dream crazy and they have no concept of how they are going to attain the crazy dream! When I was a kid I didn’t need specifics just some good ol’ fairy dust, a hook up from the tooth fairy and that thing we call imagination. Dreams no matter how weird or impossible were attainable and one day I was gonna be a kid doctor who was also a veterinarian and occasionally moonlighted on the mickey mouse club. No? Just me?

I am just sayin, when you’re young the word impossible is non-existent and life is an adventure — not something you have to navigate with money or specifics. I found as I aged my childhood dreams got replaced with teenage love affairs and then adulthood found me broken, unprepared and in desperate need of Jesus. Truth is, in the midst of it all, along the journey I forgot how to dream and I didn’t even realize it…

So I like many others found myself grown up, cynical and trying to serve Jesus. I like many others found myself searching for my purpose and some how along the way God sized dreams began growing in my heart. I like many others found myself in the quicksand of questions and concerns…

What am I called to?

Lord, could you be more specific?

What’s next?

I can’t move forward if I don’t know exactly what I am suppose to do!

It’s funny how the older we get details and specifics become what we think we need to move forward when all we need is to stop and relinquish our dreams and many times our agendas. If you get stuck on the “what if’s” and “what next’s” you’ll kill your ability to dream.

( cue obnoxious sigh and insert eye rolling here )

I am now going to tell you what I wish someone would have told me in that season where I was trying to align my dreams with the illusive call on my life that I had no idea what it was!

” The call of God is not an occupation or something you have to attain. It’s not something you have to find or search after, it’s a positioning of the heart.

That repositioning is accompanied by a, “Yes God, use my life and my dreams for the kingdom. Use Me. Send Me.”

God doesn’t want you to shelf your dreams and pick up the call, He wants you surrender your dreams and follow Him.”

When Jesus called the disciples ( who were fisherman ) He didn’t say I will make you wall street bankers, or famous rabbis with a speaking ministry! He expounded upon the gifting set and dreams they already had and the ones they were being faithful with at the time. He said, ” I will make you fishers of men.” They were fisherman…see what He did there.  The other thing I love about that scene in Matthew 4 is that the disciples immediately dropped their nets. They dropped what they’d successfully used to accompany their giftings and dreams and allowed Jesus to now teach them how to use what they had for the Kingdom, for His glory. He didn’t say for how long or where exactly it would take them, He just said I am going to expand your fishing abilities to impact the Kingdom. For the next three years He modeled the fruits of the spirit and taught them how to be fishers of men with the filter of love, peace and joy. At the end of three years he left them with this…

Go out and make disciples in all the nations. Ceremonially wash them through baptism in the name of the triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then disciple them. Form them in the practices and postures that I have taught you, and show them how to follow the commands I have laid down for you. And I will be with you, day after day, to the end of the age.

Simply said,

Be Jesus in the world. Live your life in such a way where others see Jesus and are drawn to Jesus.

How do you do that?

You should love the Eternal, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.  Mark 12:30 ( the Voice )

I’ll make it even easier: LOVE GOD. LOVE PEOPLE. LIVE SURRENDERED ( Yep, those dreams you have…surrender them )

So what are you doing right now that you can surrender and give back to God? What nets and dreams are you holding on to that need to be dropped? What can you be doing right now through the filter of love, peace and joy? Whatever it is, God wants you to be a light where you are. Light bulbs are just glass and wire with out electricity, they have to be connected to work. You are meant to be a light but you have to be connected, surrendered, ready to say yes in order for things to work.

If you’re a student … be a light at your school.

If you work in the market place  … be a light at work.

If you’re a mom … be a light to your kids.

Remember, the disciples said yes, followed Jesus, connected themselves to the cause that was bigger than themselves and they accomplished great things. I love how Ephesians 3:20-21 puts it;

…God can do so many awe-inspiring things, immeasurable things, things greater than we ever could ask or imagine through the power at work in us…

So my friend, I encourage you today wherever you are to DREAM BIG, you were always meant to believe in the impossible.

DROP YOUR NETS, whatever it is in your life  that you know you have to lay down, do it. You can’t move forward half surrendered.

Finally, I implore you to FOLLOW. Follow Jesus, no questions asked. Greatness is on the otherside of no questions asked.

Truestory,
Chari
