Just over here with a machete trying to pioneer and stuff…

I am only 36 but in my line of work I am a dinosaur. See, the creative field is like a beacon to the young, the adventurer and sadly, the undecided.

What I mean is, you have two types of creatives, the truly called and the truly instagrammed.

The truly called are

    • photographers who really KNOW how to use their camera, and they don’t capture for the ‘gram, they capture for the joy
    • filmmakers who don’t just tell stories but they instead become the story, and they are impacted by the story long after it was shared
    • songwriters who can actually write. I’ll leave that one there…
    • artists who don’t blame their lack of success on being misunderstood, because they are in it for the art, not the fame

The truly called don’t care if they aren’t considered creatives because they know being called “a creative” isn’t who they are, creativity is just their talent, their gift to the world. Those who are truly called to this field of creativity, especially in ministry have to be pioneers, people with solutions that are unseen by most. Those that are NOT truly called to the field, like every other fire, a wayward wind of disappointment or what is deemed as success will steal their ember and they will then attempt to find themselves in the next big thing.

Why do I share this with you?

I don’t know.

I’m just writing.

I’m just processing.

I’m just sharing.

I have a firm belief in the vastness of who I am that If i don’t live this life or at least attempt to live it like a machete-wielding, jungle trekking pioneer then those young people I love and lead won’t find the road to true success in my field or a true understanding of the Kingdom.  Not because I am the greatest designer, or Christian but because the craft isn’t what’s important in my field, LISTENING is.

  • Hearing vision when there is none.
  • Hearing encouragement where there is none
  • Hearing God speak into a chaotic situation when everything around you is super loud
  • Hearing the needs of others when you’re lost or tired in a project

Listening is the key to keeping creativity fresh, and its the key to keeping your compass focused on what is truly on trend. Listening isn’t just for those that they call creative. I am also a firm believer that EVERYONE is creative, EVERYONE is called to bring solutions to earthly problems and LISTENING is for EVERYONE.

So get good at tuning into what God is doing.

Get great at listening to what is really important.

You’ll never be a pioneer in your field if you first aren’t a pioneer in His presence.

  1. Chari,
Great post. It was further confirmation on what I feel like God has put on my heart for my word next year. “PAY ATTENTION.” I’m a little freaked out by what I felt like the Holy Spirit said, but I’m going to be a machete wielding pioneer of listening to His leading. Thanks for sharing.
