DEVELOPMENT should never be looked at as a stepping stone towards DISCOVERY, instead it should be embraced as an essential chapter preceding DEPLOYMENT.
DISCOVERY is not the goal, DEPLOYMENT is.
I lead a pretty young creative team. Let me clarify, young in age but not in heart or wisdom. On top of all but 1 being in their 20’s they are all incredibly creative and eager and full of feelings. Not bad feels, just lots of feels. They are also my favorite people and I am pretty sure in this season you will hear a lot about them because I tend to talk about what I am currently investing in. That’s what brings me to today’s topic…investing.
I love investing in and developing people as much as Oprah loves bread! In 20 years of ministry I have found that developing and pushing others forward is pretty much my favorite thing to do. I’ve been invested in and have seen it done well and I’ve seen it done poorly. I’ve had mentors and I have mentored. I’ve helped develop and I’ve walked through development…I am always walking through some kind of development. So when it comes to the topic of people and development my heart longs to see it done well and done through the filter of LOVE.
I can only speak from my experience but investing in people is not a science, nor is it easy. It’s also never really successful if there are agendas on the table or if there is a desired outcome from whoever is being invested in or doing the developing. It has to be spirit-led and with no expectations. Jesus loved and developed because it was ingrained in Him to see people become everything He knew they could be. So HE LOVED THEM through their tax collector tendencies and HE LOVED THEM through their bent towards betrayal. Regardless of if they were caught in the act or hiding in a tree, LOVE was the GOAL, and it was LOVE that developed and pushed them forward. Jesus loves people, and if you invest in others with an agenda your return will be temporal. If you solely invest with LOVE in mind, the return will always be eternal. You can’t fix people, but you can LOVE people. So do that. Just love people, in the end that’s all that matters, and God will always fill the gaps.
