Pursue Joy

January 2, 2014

Joy is essential. Pursue Joy. – Jeremy Riddle

Ever had one of those days where you miss “joy”. Monday was one of those days for me. Seems in the hustle and bustle of the last couple weeks I forgot to pursue joy in the midst of all the amazing things happening around me.

I actively pursued my work…
I reluctantly pursued the laundry that stared at me every night I came home…
I aggressively pursued the million different ways I could possibly get out of jury duty…
but joy, I forgot to pursue.

It says in Psalms 16:11 that, “In His presence is fullness of joy…” So this morning I made a decision to actively seek His presence in everything I did, no matter how tired I felt or how busy I got. Seems like a given for a person who is in full time ministry, huh? But to be honest, somewhere in the last couple weeks I lost my rhythm.  And without realizing it, joy fled as well.

See, joy doesn’t just happen. It’s something that is activated through worship and maintained with thankfulness. It’s not a feeling, it’s a state-of-mind. And thankfulness is the antidote for the absence of joy. So today I reminded myself that I need to be thankful and that thankfulness is God’s will for my life. ( 1 Thessalonians 5:18 ) I reminded myself I have more things to be grateful for than to be frustrated about. I took countless deep breaths and told myself that at the end of the day God is big enough to handle my crazy and loves me enough to walk me through the gaps in my character.

( *Sigh )

It’s the moments like this help me remember who’s I am, and where I need to focused. I see whatcha did there, Lord — challenge accepted.

currently in pursuit,

Sometimes we forget that God puts people in our lives that give us His joy when we’re around them. I don’t even think they realize that they carry this infectious way about them that makes us laugh automatically and uncontrollably when they’re around. I think that just like God gives us all our own measure of faith, He also gives us our portion of joy. The more joy that we share the more He gives us.
God’s children must carry their feelings well. Those who are genuine, and honest, and pure in their intentions, can’t help but share their child-like joy. It’s really God’s love reflecting though them. This joy is part of His daily plan for us, as well as our anointing, our equipment, that we must allow to function, absent of fear, judgement, and even human reflection.
Give it away, Chari. You have so much of God’s joy within you. It needs to be given away. I have known you all of your wonderful and peculiar life, and whether I see you once a month or every day you give me unspeakable joy when I’m around you. Today, practice giving joy away to everyone God loves, not just who you like, or who you’re comfortable with. Give it away during your most darkest hours. Give it away when you’re rushed, when you’re not feeling well or tired, when you think someone derailed you, or when you perceive dishonesty. Just give it away, without human conviction. Since it’s not yours to give, God will always give you more.
Share your beautiful smile. It’s contagious!
